Tackers Sail Training Program Melbourne Victoria Australia

Program 1, Week 7, 4 April 2009

Well it was grey and overcast and the water looked a little choppy (especially on the shore) so some Tackers thought that it was quite windy - but it wasn't! How deceiving it can be when there are a few waves!

But this week, it was time to catch up on some theory first.

Rigging
Hamish and some Dads showed Tackers how to rig the boats and tie some knots - including the figure of eight, reef knot, round turn, half hitches and bow line. Someone in the photos is hiding behind the centreboard!

Sailing Rules
Andy and Richard (with the aid of some little boats on the table) went through some of the basic on-water right of way rules.

. Starboard Tack has right of way over a boat on Port Tack
(so if your boat is on Port Tack - wind coming over the left side of the boat, you must give way to the boat on Starboard Tack - wind coming over the right side of the boat and move out of their way)

. Leeward boat has right of way over the windward boat (so if your boat is upwind - closer to the wind, you must give way to the boat that is further away from the wind)

. Overtaken boat has right of way over the overtaking boat (so if your boat is passing another boat - through skill or size, then you must give way to the boat that is being overtaken)

. Sailboats have right of way over recreational motor boats
(because they can usually move more easily - they need to keep clear of you - however it is best to stay clear of all other water craft and you MUST stay clear of commercial ships, ferries, tug boats etc)

Log Books
Sue also went through the Log Book that will be signed off on our last week to remind everyone of what we have covered during the Tackers program.

Morning tea
Was then shared (and a great group photo) before we went out on the water. Wetsuits were essential because the wind was quite cool but the water was still warm.

Some Tackers were a little bit surprised after last week's calm conditions to realise that the boats really do respond when there is a bit more wind.

It was really pleasing to see some Tackers sail a bit further and some on their own again - well done! Others knew their own limits and came in - but as always, the program is about having fun and that is the best part - we do!

Last week on the 18th of April
Yes, after Easter we will be back for our last week - everyone needs to come - parents, siblings, friends and family members all welcome as we will have our presentation at the end (11am).

Thanks for your help this week

To all the Mums, Dads, Sailing Club Members and friends - we really appreciate you helping out around the club! Thanks Deb for buying the sausages and Sue for getting some just in case!

See you bright and early at 8:30am on Saturday 18/4/09!
