Tackers Sail Training Program Melbourne Victoria Australia

Program 1, Week 6, 28 March 2009

It was very flat and there was a very gentle breeze blowing when we arrived so it was time to get out on the water straight away.

Brendan got everyone organised - life jackets, hats, sunscreen, shoes and in allocated pairs as some Tackers were going to have the opportunity to go out on the water with Andy or Sue in their boat.

Thanks for your help this week

Thanks also to other Mordialloc Sailing Club members who make this program possible.

On shore briefing

This week our aim was to be able to control the boat around a triangular course and go slow if required. Some of our Tackers wanted to go for another swim but we left that for after the training.

It was a bit hard to tell how many people effectively sailed around the course because the wind died out so I could see a lot of Tackers enjoying their time floating around on the water. Tackers sure know how to have fun!

Some Tackers also had an opportunity, with the very light wind conditions, to sail ON THEIR OWN.

As it was an offshore breeze, we had to tack all the way back in to shore - so some Tackers took the easy option of being towed in and some sailed/paddled/sculled all the way in. By the way, you cannot scull in a race.

Those Tackers who sailed in on their own can be particularly proud of their achievements! Other boats raced in very quickly - the competitive spirit is alive!

Rubber Duckie rides

It became very obvious this week, with Grand Prix fever in the air, that some Tackers love speed and having the wind blowing through their hair on the rubber duckies.

When you are really sailing and racing in windy conditions, you too will feel the exhiliration of speed on the water - and the only noise will be the rush of the wind and waves - not the noisy (and sometimes smelly) outboard motor!

Wash down and pack up

With all of the other boats arriving for State Titles, we had to squeeze in around the hose to pack up the boats. But there was still time for a yummy sausage, thanks to Helen.

Next week

We only have two sessions left! If for any reason you will not be at the last one (the Saturday after Easter during the school holidays), please let me know.

See you bright and early at 8:30am on Saturday!
