Amgad Elmahdi
Amgad is the host of the Welcome to Adelaide events.

Amgad moved to Adelaide on 10 January 2007.

Amore Caffe
170 Pulteney Street (corner Pirie Street)
Adelaide South Australia 5000

Please register your attendance below (free of charge) so that we know how many people to expect on the night.

When you arrive, ask for either 'Newcomers Network' or 'Amgad' and look for the people wearing sticky label name tags.  You can come on your own or with others as Amgad will introduce you to other guests as soon as you arrive.  Amgad attends with his wife and children - so others are more than welcome.

It is an entirely self selected group - everyone who attends is looking to meet new people (whether you are a local, have moved to Adelaide recently or moved some time ago).

Transport

To view the public transport timetables, please visit http://www.adelaidemetro.com.au

There is street car parking nearby.

Refreshments

To be purchased by you on the night.  You may like to bring some smaller notes and coins so that you can easily pay for your own refreshments.

Cost

You will need to tell us that you are coming by completing the registration form below (no additional cost).

Designed for

People who have moved to Adelaide, from the country, interstate or overseas.  This includes expatriates, migrants, international students, Australian repatriates, people on work assignment etc.

People visiting Adelaide.

You can come on your own or with other people.

You can be any age, children can come with you.

In the past, this event has attracted both men and women, some single, some in relationships, some who have come on their own, some who have come with other people. Some people come on a regular basis and others only come once.

These people have moved to Adelaide from countries all over the world, and have spoken many different languages and had many different faiths. Some are Australians who have returned to Australia after time overseas and others have lived in Australia a long time but still felt the need to connect with other newcomers (and share their wisdom and advice).

Whatever your story, you will be welcome at our events.

Event Description

This informal social event has been designed to help you meet other people who have moved to Adelaide.

You may like to bring your own business or personal card to share with other people you meet or a small notepad and pen if you are given information from others that you would like to keep.

It is usually a small group (around 15-20 people from all over the world).  We encourage everyone to move around during the evening so it is easy to meet other people. Everyone is most welcome and you can continue to attend other Welcome to Adelaide events as frequently or as infrequently as you like.

These events are also held in Melbourne on the Second Friday of the month (since January 2005)
http://www.newcomersnetwork.com/nn/content/view/172/29/

and in Sydney on the Second Sunday of the month (since March 2005)

On arrival

You can introduce yourself to Amgad and he will introduce you to others. He will also give you a sticky label name tag.

Assistance received from

Amgad Elmahdi kindly attends the Welcome to Adelaide events as a volunteer for Newcomers Network.  Lyn Shea from Adelaide Relocations has also offered to provide back up support.

Professional Background
Amgad has eleven years experience in various aspects of hydrology and water management. After obtaining a Masters of Science in Water-Ecological Studies in Egypt, Amgad went on to study environment conservation in Greece and completed a Masters degree in Land and Water Management in Italy.

In 2003, Amgad received an award from the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Egypt, for Best Master Thesis in Water Resources Management.

In late 2006, he finished his PhD on Irrigation System Management at the University of Melbourne and now he is working with CSIRO land and water as a Research Scientist.

Cross Cultural Background
Amgad was elected as a postgraduate councillor for the University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association (UMPA), and then as the Activities and Communication Officer in 2004 until 2006.

In 2005, he founded a Cross Cultural Group at the University of Melbourne. It helps students from diverse backgrounds, departments and faculties to become integrated and understand other cultures, particularly Australian culture.

In 2006, he was named the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) and Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australian Harmony Hero of 2006 for his work promoting cross-cultural understanding and dissolving cultural barriers amongst students at the University of Melbourne.

He moved to Melbourne in August 2003 to start his PhD as an international student and in January 2007, he moved to Adelaide and has now been appointed as the President of the Australian Federation of International Students (AFIS), a non-profit incorporated association established in August 2002 to address issues in relation to international students. AFIS is committed to generating multicultural awareness and planning cultural events in the general community.

Personal Background
Amgad is married and has two young sons. He likes going to the gym, playing soccer and basketball and is interested in the sport of swimming. His main favorite activity is playing oriental music using the "TAR," a form of tambourine and like the professional "Darbuqa", a funnel-shaped drum made of clay or aluminium (the famous one with belly dancing). He also enjoys travelling around and visiting new places.
