Mildura Newcomer's Club - Mildura, Victoria

Registered Association Number A0022770A

Mildura is a vibrant and rapidly growing regional centre in northwestern Victoria, whose climate, river access and employment opportunities attract many new residents to the area. The region?s population is increasing equal to the booming housing industry.

The biggest challenge confronting most residents who are new to the area is to simply break into an established community. Experience shows that people who feel a sense of acceptance and inclusion in their new community are more likely to remain in the area long term. The challenge for newcomers is to establish themselves, find new friends and to be considered part of the community. Our mission as a club is to provide a support role for residents who are new to the City of Mildura.

Almost thirty years ago an enterprising woman, Mrs. Sue Griffin, officially founded the Mildura Newcomers Club. Prior to her arrival to the region, Mrs. Griffin had been involved with the Shepparton Newcomers Club, which has recently celebrated its forty-year anniversary. The Mildura Newcomers Club became incorporated in 1991 and has continued to this day with its original mission to;

. Extend a social welcome to all newly arrived female residents of Mildura
. To acquaint newcomers to Mildura with details of all facilities, amenities and local businesses available in the district
. To extend hospitality and help newcomers to develop a social network
. To promote friendly relations and understanding between newcomers, themselves and older residents of the district.
. To provide social and recreational activities for new families.

Despite being an excellent place to live, Mildura'ss remote location means that most newcomers become geographically and emotionally isolated from their traditional support network of family and friends. The Mildura Newcomers Club has become a lifeline to many new residents who have taken up membership.

Our goals for future development are to maintain and strengthen our ability to welcome newcomers to Sunraysia and to promote the club to a wider audience. We are currently planning our thirtieth anniversary celebrations, which are to be held in June 2004.
