Welcome to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
On the Second Friday of every month (check this page for dates), you or anyone you know can join us at our Welcome to Melbourne event from 6:00pm - 8:00pm.
22 January 2010 (third Friday as some people still on holidays)
12 February 2010
12 March 2010 (please arrive before 7:15pm)
Special event: Samba Cine Club is on Saturday 20/3/10 at 17:00pm for 17:30pm screening) at LOOP BAR (23 Meyers Place - off Bourke St - between Exhibition and Spring Streets, Melbourne) Samba Cine Club is an innitiative to promote Brazilian culture through cinema and music. The idea is to show different faces of Brazil, films from different periods and places and talk about different issues.
This time we will be screening "The Year My Parents Went on Vacation" by Cao Hamburguer. The film is about a boy who is left with his grandfather when his parents had to "disappear" on vacation. The film is set in SP in 1970 when Brazil was in the height of the dictatorship and also the year we won the World Cup.
We are inviting some special guests from Brazil to share and discuss their experiences from that time. We will play some good tunes from that period, hopefully the ones that were censored!
Its free entry and full of subtitles ;) More information, Juliana Frantz, 0404640771 or juliana@tropicalia.com.au

It is between Elizabeth and Queen Streets on the opposite side of the road to Flinders Street Railway Station.
There are pictures of the venue and further details online at Rendezvous Hotel Melbourne City
To find The Bar where we will be meeting, come into the foyer (up a few stairs from the street) and then look for the stairs on the front wall (timber panelling on the sides) and go up to the first floor.
The Bar overlooks Flinders Street and has leadlight windows. You can arrive anytime after 6pm and ask for 'Newcomers Network' or 'Sue Ellson' and I will give you a sticky label name tag and then you can start socialising. You can order and pay for your own drinks from the bar.
Come and join us for a conversation about something other than the weather and sport! All ages and backgrounds welcome.
Please bring sufficient cash to pay for your own drinks and food (you don't need to buy a round of drinks for other guests). You may choose to purchase food items from the bar menu or invite other guests to join you at an alternative venue for dinner later in the evening. You do not need to order an alcoholic beverage.
Some guests remain until very late - you can stay as long as you like. If you would like a name tag, please arrive before 8:00pm.
It is an entirely self selected group - everyone who attends is looking to meet new people (whether you are a local, have moved to Melbourne recently or moved here some time ago).
See the Metlink Melbourne website for public transport details. The venue is closest to Flinders Street Railway Station. Several trams run along Flinders Street.
Car parking in the city can be expensive, although several car parks offer a special rate after 6pm - usually around $12 for the evening.
On street car parking can sometimes be found but cannot be relied upon - and of course, please do not drink and drive.
The car park on the eastern side of the hotel on Flinders Street has a special offer if you enter after 5:30pm.
There is no cost to attend this event
To be purchased by you on the night. You may like to bring some smaller notes and coins so that you can easily pay for your own refreshments.
People who have moved to Melbourne, from the country, interstate or overseas. This includes expatriates, migrants, international students, Australian repatriates, people on work assignment etc.
People visiting Melbourne. You can come on your own or with other people. You can be any age, children can come with you. You can stay for five minutes or five hours! Most guests usually arrive by 7pm.
In the past, this event has attracted both men and women, some single, some in relationships, some who have come on their own, some who have come with other people. Some people come on a regular basis and others only come once.
These people have moved to Melbourne from countries all over the world, and have spoken many different languages and had many different faiths. Some are Australians who have returned to Australia after time overseas and others have lived in Australia a long time but still felt the need to connect with other newcomers (and share their wisdom and advice).
Whatever your story, you will be welcome at our events.
This informal social event has been designed to help you meet other people who have moved to Melbourne.
You may like to bring your own business or personal card to share with other people you meet or a small notepad and pen if you are given information from others that you would like to keep.
We usually attract between 50 and 100 people each month. We encourage everyone to move around during the evening so it is easy to meet other people. Everyone is most welcome and you can continue to attend other Welcome to Melbourne events as frequently or as infrequently as you like.
These events are also held in other locations and have been held in Melbourne every month since January 2005.
You can introduce yourself to Sue and she will introduce you to others. Sue will also give you a sticky label name tag.
These events are sometimes hosted by other representatives of Newcomers Network - please visit this page of the website for the latest information.

We look forward to meeting you! Several people attend on their own - so don't be shy - you can talk to anyone wearing a name tag or ask your host to introduce you to people.
You are more than welcome to share this information with other people you know.
If you forget to tell us you are coming, just turn up!
