In Australia, during December and January, a lot of
Australians return home to visit their family and friends.
Other Australians may have returned to Australia to live during the year and they haven't quite got all of their new friendship networks established (especially if they have been away for more than five years and they do not share much in common with their 'old' friends).
Newcomers Network has hosted four previous 'Welcome Home' parties for Australian Expatriates and Repatriates on 30/12/09, 26/12/08, 27/12/07, and 28/12/06 in conjunction with Ian Wood from the Melbourne based social club 'Fun, Food and Friendship.'

Welcome Home Party for Australian Expatriates and Repatriates 26/12/08

Ian Wood and Sue Ellson 26/12/08
Once again, we would like everyone to join us from 6pm - 8pm at the Rendezvous Hotel - the venue for the Newcomers Network regular Welcome to Melbourne events held on the Second Friday of every month.
All of our events are open to everyone - singles, couples and families. If you have the time available, you can attend part or all of the event.
You can come on your own, with a partner, a friend, your family, children, your neighbour, everyone is welcome.
You do not need to be an Australian returning to Melbourne to attend. If you don't have somewhere to go on Wednesday 29 December 2010, you can come and join us!!
Alternatively, if you are not going to be in Australia on this date, why not use this opportunity to find an Australian living close to where you are via our Australian Expatriates page or the Australian Expatriates Facebook Group.
We also host free Welcome to Melbourne events on the Second Friday of every month, Living, Working and Networking in Melbourne events and the Christmas Day Picnic Lunch on 25 December 2010.

It is between Elizabeth and Queen Streets on the opposite side of the road to Flinders Street Railway Station.
There are pictures of the venue and further details online at Rendezvous Hotel Melbourne City
To find The Bar where we will be meeting, come into the foyer (up a few stairs from the street) and then look for the stairs on the front wall (timber panelling on the sides) and go up to the first floor. The Bar overlooks Flinders Street and has leadlight windows. You can arrive anytime after 6pm and ask for 'Newcomers Network' or 'Sue Ellson' and I will give you a sticky label name tag and then you can start socialising. You can order and pay for your own drinks from the bar.
Come and join us for a very casual 'Welcome Home' party. All ages and backgrounds welcome.
Please bring sufficient cash to pay for your own drinks and food (you don't need to buy a round of drinks for other guests). You may choose to purchase food items from the bar menu or invite other guests to join you at an alternative venue for dinner later in the evening. You do not need to order an alcoholic beverage.
Some guests remain until very late - you can stay as long as you like. If you would like a name tag, please arrive before 8:00pm.
It is an entirely self selected group - everyone who attends is looking to meet new people (whether you are just visiting, a local, have moved to Melbourne recently, or have moved here some time ago).
See the Metlink Melbourne website for public transport details. The venue is closest to Flinders Street Railway Station. Several trams run along Flinders Street.
Car parking in the city can be expensive, although several car parks offer a special rate after 6pm - usually around $12 for the evening. On street car parking can sometimes be found but cannot be relied upon - and of course, please do not drink and drive.
Some city car parks may be closed because it is a public holiday so I encourage you to use public transport if you can.
There is no cost to attend this event
To be purchased by you on the night. You may like to bring some smaller notes and coins so that you can easily pay for your own refreshments.
Australians who have lived overseas and are either visiting Melbourne or have returned (repatriates) in the last twelve months.
However, our events are open to everyone.
This includes people who have moved to Melbourne, from the country, interstate or overseas. It also includes expatriates, migrants, international students, people on work assignment etc.
People visiting Melbourne. You can come on your own or with other people. You can be any age, children can come with you. You can stay for five minutes or five hours! Most guests usually arrive by 7pm.
In the past, this event has attracted both men and women, some single, some in relationships, some who have come on their own, some who have come with other people.
These people have moved to Melbourne from countries all over the world, and have spoken many different languages and had many different faiths.
Whatever your story, you will be welcome at our events.
Welcome home!
This informal social event has been designed to help you meet other people who have returned to Melbourne or who are currently living here.
You may like to bring your own business or personal card to share with other people you meet or a small notepad and pen if you are given information from others that you would like to keep.
We usually attract between 80 and 120 people at these events. We encourage everyone to move around during the evening so it is easy to meet other people. Everyone is most welcome and you can continue to attend other Newcomers Network and Fun, Food and Friendship events as frequently or as infrequently as you like.
You can introduce yourself to Sue and she will introduce you to others. Sue will also give you a sticky label name tag.

You may like to connect virtually with people via the Newcomers Network Melbourne Australia Facebook Group or the Newcomers Network Australian Expatriates Facebook Group
As already mentioned above, we also host free Welcome to Melbourne events on the Second Friday of every month, Living, Working and Networking in Melbourne events and the Christmas Day Picnic Lunch on 25 December 2010.
Alternatively, if you prefer, you can send an email directly to melbourne@newcomersnetwork.com.
We look forward to meeting you! Several people attend on their own - so don't be shy - you can talk to anyone wearing a name tag or ask your host to introduce you to people.
You are more than welcome to share this information with other people you know.
If you forget to tell us you are coming, just turn up!
