26/1/11 Australia Day Parade People's March Melbourne Australia - Newcomers Network Group
Wednesday 26 January 2011
Reserve your space now as places are limited
1. Background
On 30 December 2010, Sue Ellson from Newcomers Network received an email about the upcoming Australia Day Parade People's March in Melbourne. After completing the application forms and speaking to Carolyn Best, we decided to include a group of people who have moved to Melbourne in the Australia Day Parade.
The People's March will walk along Swanston Street, over the Yarra River and turn left into Linlithgow Avenue into the Kings Domain Gardens and you can then collect a bottle of water and be reunited with friends and family and participate in the various activities in the gardens or perhaps have a picnic lunch.
2. Host
Sue Ellson, Founder and Director of Newcomers Network
Mobile/Cell Phone 0402 243 271
3. Venue
Meet on the corner of Swanston Street and Lonsdale Street
at 9:30am (outside the phone shop, opposite corner to McDonald's)
We will leave this spot at 9:45am to walk to the parade meeting spot so you MUST be on time.
Ring Sue on 0402 243 271 if you cannot find the group. Look for the Newcomers Network sign.
You MUST register to attend as we are limited to 30 participants in the parade and you MUST attend because your spot has been reserved and your hat and umbrella have been purchased (for the first 20 people who turn up).
The parade should finish just after midday in Kings Domain Gardens.
4. What to Wear
This is VERY important, please read carefully.
You will need to wear clothing that represents something of where you have come from. It could be a national costume, some sports clothing, clothing with a country name or flag on it, a type of clothing (like a sari, kimono, kilt). The more colourful and vibrant the better!
Please also indicate on the registration form the countries you have lived in (or if you are from interstate in Australia, the other state/city/town you have come from).
When we meet at 9:30am, you will need to collect your hat and umbrella and provide $11 in cash to cover the cost of this item. You will then wear it in the parade and can keep it to take home.
5. Transport
See the Metlink Melbourne website for public transport details. The venue is closest to Melbourne Central Railway Station. Trams may not be running along Swanston Street in preparation for the march.
5. Cost
There is no cost to watch the parade but if you are participating, you need to bring $11 in cash with you and you must register to attend.
6. Refreshments
You are encouraged to source your own refreshments before the event or join other guests afterwards and pay for your own refreshments at a venue close by.
7. This event is designed for
Anyone who has moved to Melbourne and would like to participate in the parade.
10. How to tell us you are coming
As we need to provide your name to the parade organisers, please register to attend now.
We look forward to meeting you!
You are more than welcome to share this information with other people you know.
